Caly van Leeuwen (they/them) is a painter, printmaker, and sculptor currently working in Western Massachusetts. Through ink, paint, and felted sculpture, Caly uses layers, transparencies, and form to investigate identity within social and ecological relationships.

Caly’s artistic interest in identity spans both intrinsic or interior identity as well as identity within social and ecological environments. Tensions that continue to recur are the relationship between received identity and chosen identity and finding more ethical ways to live and interact with each other and the nonhuman world in the midst of destructive systems of power.

Caly has been awarded two Schupf Fellowships, an Emerging Artist Grant from the Quabbin Art Association and Mass. Arts Council, and is the Student Representative for Studio Arts at Amherst College
